The Instrument Whisperer
Rick Schultz is an author, inventor and lecturer, and the retired Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Spectrum Surgical Instruments Corporation, which he founded in 1986. Under his direction, the company had over 250 employees across the United States and grew to a national presence.
Schultz served as contributing editor of IAHCSMM’s Central Service Technical Textbook (Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Editions). He authored the textbooks Inspecting Surgical Instruments: An Illustrated Guide and The World of Surgical Instruments: The Definitive Inspection Textbook, which was released in June 2018. He also completed a textbook for veterinary medicine, The World of Surgical Instruments for Animal Health, which was released in January 2022.
He is known as The Instrument Whisperer™ in the magazine Process, where his monthly column explores surgical instrument inspection and repair.

Beyond the Books
Schultz has provided educational lectures to surgery personnel and healthcare professionals across the country. He also provides sales culture and revenue growth consulting and serves on three companies’ board of directors.
He has been an Entrepreneur in Residence at Kent State University, Ambassador Crawford College of Business and Entrepreneurship since 2019.
